Title:Portfolio Manager

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:  The portfolio manager is responsible for maintaining satisfactory credit quality within the assigned portfolio.  The role brings value to the organization by partnering with commercial loan officers to address a variety of service requests including loan maturities, annual reviews, and modifications.  The portfolio manager will maintain a thorough understanding of the borrower’s financial condition to ensure the Bank understands the risk.

Essential Position Responsibilities:

  • To assess and determine the financial condition, repayment capacity and character of existing borrowers and guarantors through the review and analysis of financial information including:  accountant or internally prepared financial statements, tax returns, personal financial statements, liquidity statements and business and personal credit reports in conformance with the bank’s loan policies and underwriting guidelines. 
  • To assess and determine the quality and adequacy of collateral and capital (equity) through the review of appraisals, evaluations, environmental reports, inspection reports, condition reports, market reports, accounts receivable agings, purchase invoices and other collateral information based on the bank’s loan policies and underwriting guidelines.
  • To write credit memos, loan reviews and other reports summarizing information about existing borrowers including: the purpose of the loan, the experience/ background of the borrower, the financial condition of borrowers and guarantors,  repayment capacity, collateral adequacy and industry/market and using that information along with the bank’s loan policies and banking regulations to evaluate a loan’s conformance to the bank’s lending guidelines and policies and making recommendations to Directors and Bank Management about the extension of credit to borrowers, risk grading of loans and any other pertinent conditions.
  • To assist Bank Management in the timely monitoring of credit risk in the bank. 
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Underwriting Manager or Credit Officers of the bank.
  • Identify potential problems that could cause increased risk to the Bank and determine if a borrower needs to be managed within the Bank’s special assets team.



  • 5 years or more of experience as a bank credit analyst and/or loan underwriter.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Business.
  • Basic knowledge of book and tax accounting.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including grammar and punctuation.
  • Ability to use, understand and apply credit policy and bank regulations to responsibilities.
  • Ability to prepare financial spreads and utilize them in financial analysis reporting.
  • Exercise good judgment and discretion in the handling of confidential information and making recommendations to Directors and Bank Management for loans requiring credit decisions.
  • Proficient in conventional typing and use of the bank’s computer programs in the completion of duties.
  • Ability to sit and concentrate for extended periods of time without interruption.
  • Good people skills including: ability to communicate, negotiate and facilitate teamwork with bank employees and customers in the completion of responsibilities.
